Surfshark offers a premium VPN service at such an astonishingly low value that it may be any net user’s go-to. Since it prices less that doesn’t mean it’s not feature-rich. It packs in some howling options. Does it fall short to be a perfect choice? Undoubtedly, there’s an area for a few improvements however it succeeded to impress us and here is our full review of Surfshark VPN.
Whether you wish to access blocked website in your country or simply want to be anonymous online, you require a solid VPN which goes light on your wallet. Isn’t it? Free VPN can help you to bypass any restrictions online but they can’t offer services without injecting ads which can ruin your browsing experience. If you want to use public wifi without fearing a man in the middle attack, hide your IP or location and be completely anonymous, you want to invest in a solid VPN service.
There are several premium VPN out there however only a few charges you less for what they offer. Surfshark is one such a VPN that offers loads of features however charges you merely a little amount of money. Should you also consider this VPN as go-to or search for other alternatives? I assist you to make a wise decision through this elaborate review.
Surfshark VPN Features
Surfshark provides support for almost all the platforms viz. Android, iOS, windows, macOS, Linux or browsers like Chrome or Firefox. Since I have tested it in Windows and Android, this review will be confined to these two platforms only. I also tested the chrome and firefox extensions which you can use in case you just want the VPN inside the browser only.
Apart from letting you download any restricted content online, this VPN follows no logs policy. Also torrenting becomes super easy and safe with very good speed. When you start torrenting, this VPN routes your connection through the torrent-friendly server so that you can get maximum download speed.
Once you hit the setting icon on the top right corner of the application, you will be greeted with very limited options which are good for the less tech-savvy person. The options that you get are my account(email address, current plan details and software version), general, suggest feature and help. Under the general option, you get the real stuff.
In general option, there are four subsections namely connectivity, notifications, security and advanced. Let us jump on each one by one.
Under connectivity, you get the simple user interface based settings like ‘start with windows’, ‘auto connect, and WiFi. Under Wifi, you get two options namely known and unknown networks. Depending on the type of WiFi, you can opt to ask, always protect and never protect. In case if you are using public WiFi, going for always protect makes sense. You can select ask or never protect when you are using personal hotspot or WiFi in your home.
The notifications option is there to let you know if the status of VPN changes.
This allows you to ensure your maximum security while online browsing as it offers Kill switch and Clean web. Killswitch just cuts off the internet connection as soon as VPN connection drops. That way it keeps you anonymous. The clean web is there to safeguard you from trackers and malware which are present on infected websites.
Also, it incorporates Whitelisters for websites and applications so that they bypass VPN and you can browse those websites over normal connections. You can do so to use services like Gmail or Facebook without being blacklisted and facing challenges.
In advanced options, you can take advantage of protocols so that you get maximum speed according to demand of the hour. However, automatic protocol worked perfectly fine for my needs which included normal browsing and chatting with mates. Other two options which you get are no borders-mode and crash report which you can keep on all the time.
Surfshark VPN has a MultiHop feature which is same as Double VPN feature of NordVPN. Both the features are essentially the same with just the name being different. Surprisingly, the speed provided by this VPN in MultihHop mode was excellent. Double VPN offered by Nord VPN was mediocre in terms of speed. To turn on the MultiHop in Surfshark you just need to click on “all locations” under the welcome screen of the program. Once you do that, you can find MultiHop option on the top right corner.
Once you signup on the website and buy any plan, you will get an option to download it by entering your login credentials. You can download the Android app directly as a 7-day trial but you must log in to use this VPN’s services after that. The download size for EXE file is just 12 MBs and that for APK file is around 8 MBs.
This VPN offers all the necessary features which are required for a safe online activity. It allows you to access US Netflix very easily. Also, I liked the fact that this VPN routes your network through torrent friendly network automatically to allow maximum download speed. Is the cake fully baked? The answer is no. Because I didn’t like the performance of VPN’s Android app. As I couldn’t access the restricted website a few times while trying to access from the phone. However, those websites were easily accessible from the windows based system with the VPN installed. I think this bug can be fixed in future updates.
VPN tend to affect the speed of your internet. But this VPN impressed me. The download speed which I got while using VPN was 90% of what I got when using the normal connection. This is a very good result as I got very less download speed in other VPNs like NordVPN or Cyberghost.
Both desktop and mobile apps launch quickly when hit manually and connect within 5 seconds to the optimal server automatically. However, you can select “change location” option to connect to the server of your choice. The connection time is almost the same in both the connection methods.
The desktop VPN works as expected but I didn’t like the Android App performance which sometimes fails to establish a reliable connection and disconnects unexpectedly. App crashed a few times as well. Hopefully, the bugs will be fixed in the future updates and this VPN will work as it does in PC. The PC application works without consuming many resources and runs smoothly.
While giving you premium and robust services(currently on PC only), this VPN provider has kept the very competitive price for various durations. For 12 months plan, you just need to pay $1.99 which is very less as compared to express VPN and cyber ghost. NordVPN is slightly expensive than this VPN costing $2.99 only. Pricing is perfect for every kind of user who wants to invest less but gets maximum features out of a VPN service.
With keeping the price in check and provide all the necessary VPN services, Surfshark is clearly a go-to in my opinion. Yes, it lags a bit in mobile App but hopefully, bugs will be fixed in future updates. NordVPN seems to be a little expensive than this VPN. NordVPN has Double VPN feature whereas Surfshark uses MultiHop to provide an extra layer of protection. Using Double VPN or MultiHop is not recommended if you need a good speed. This VPN is for someone who wants a powerful VPN but doesn’t want to break the bank. In comments tell us what features do you expect the most from a VPN?
With excellent speed and performance, Surfshark delivers what it promises. By providing MultiHop feature, this VPN adds next level of security to your online activity which is an extra bonus.
